Accredited Drug Testing provides all-encompassing hair follicle drug testing in Carlyss, Louisiana. If you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with centers across the Nation to administer them. Generally, having 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. Hair tests assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other specialized testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a prevalent method for drug testing. Numerous employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug testing over typical urine tests. Employers who enforce strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers utilize these tests. A significant advantage is the extended drug detection window, typically up to 90 days, collected in a monitored collection process, and hardly possible to falsify. However, urine tests remain the most precise for recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an effective means of identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term records of drugs and alcohol by securing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When taken near the scalp, it offers up to a roughly 3-month detection window for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sampling size of 1.5 inches, approximately 200 hair strands (around the width of a #2 pencil), closest to the scalp provides 100mg, which is perfect for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for measurement is suggested. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a proportional amount of body hair can be collected. References to head hair specify only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning handles the initial processing of a sample in a laboratory system. This process involves confirming the sample's seal and shipment integrity, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any left-out data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly method to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening demand further verification.

A sample showing presumptive positivity in Screening has additional hair taken from the original specimen for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are isolated at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening a challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity are cleaned before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Pros of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug assessments can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is quite difficult, leading to more precise results.
  • Offers historical data: It offers a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Lacks recent use detection: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are typically costlier than other testing approaches.
  • Result variances: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
