Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Chauvin, Louisiana. If a hair drug or alcohol examination is required, we at Accredited Drug Testing excel in this domain, with nationwide facilities ready to conduct hair assessments. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair. Hair analyses can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific tests.

In recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle testing. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists now opt for hair drug tests over the usual urine tests. Companies with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationary programs favor these tests for their extended detection period covering up to 90 days. Hair collection is closely monitored, making tampering difficult. However, urine tests remain more precise for recent use, within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the growing hair fibers, hair offers a chronological account of substance use. When sampled near the scalp, it can detect alcohol and other drugs for up to approximately 3 months. The process of hair collection is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch length consisting of around 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) adjacent to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. A jeweler’s scale should be used for weighing the specimen. When scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four crucial stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory system. This step includes ensuring the sample's secure sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody method.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drug presence. While it is a cost-efficient means to discount drug usage in most cases, any positive screen necessitates confirmation to be legally valid. Samples that test presumptively positive in this stage require further confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations compared to alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for a period of up to 90 days, compared to urine tests that offer a shorter detection span.
  • Challenge to manipulate: It is extremely challenging to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring greater accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a record of drug use over time rather than only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Detectability of drugs in hair takes around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically costs more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", this analysis examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
