Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Convent, Louisiana. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area, with facilities across the nation tailored to such assessments. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the crown or body. These analyses can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized based on specific needs.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a prevalent method for substance screening. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals are increasingly opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by entities with strict no-drug policies due to its extended detection ability, looking back 90 days. The test is carried out under close observation, reducing chances of tampering. However, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most accurate option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It provides an extended history of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When samples are collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample size of 1.5 inches containing approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) collected closest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. It is suggested that the specimen be weighed using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. All other forms of hair (e.g., facial, axillary) fall under body hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial processing of a sample within a lab's framework. This process confirms whether the sample was sealed and dispatched appropriately, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Screening serves as a cost-effective approach to dismiss drug use in most samples; however, a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in judicial proceedings. Any samples that are initially positive during Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at notably lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid); this makes hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and in accordance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests detect drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests provide a narrower detection period.
  • Difficulty in tampering: Hair drug tests are challenging to manipulate, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical insight: They can illustrate a pattern of drug usage over time, beyond just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs generally appear in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in results: Differences such as hair color and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Convent, LA
The advantages of hair testing over traditional urine methods are multiple. Hair tests offer superior detection accuracy, often identifying substances that urine tests might miss. The reliability of hair follicle testing provides a comprehensive view of an individual's substance history, offering a more complete picture than urine, which only captures recent usage.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
