Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in St. James, Louisiana. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing with facilities across all cities nationwide prepared to carry out these tests. Hair measuring 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body is usually required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other personalized testing options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle drug tests. An increasing number of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle testing is chosen by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation. Its main advantage is its extended detection period, lasting up to 90 days, collected under observation, and very challenging to deceive. For assessing recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a formidable method for detecting alcohol and drug usage. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair strands, it offers a longer-term account of substance use. When cut near the scalp, hair can indicate alcohol and drug consumption for up to a 90-day period. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of nearly 200 hairs (around the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp equals 100mg, the perfect amount for preliminary and confirmatory testing. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, 150mg is preferable. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair isn’t an option, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be taken. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The core procedures involved in the lab processing of drug tests are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning requires entering a sample into a lab’s management system, ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and delivered, issuing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and adding any missing data not included in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial expedient evaluation for drugs. Although Screening is a cost-effective means to dismiss drug presence in many samples, a conclusive result needs further verification to stand in court. Samples with a presumptive positive in Screening need additional confirmation.

In the event of a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly reduced concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging procedure.

Confirmation for positive screens is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample is cleaned if necessary before confirmation. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning through to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter windows.
  • High integrity: It's exceedingly challenging to falsify a hair drug test, yielding more reliable results.
  • Historical pattern: It demonstrates drug usage tendencies over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect immediate use: It typically takes 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than alternative testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", these tests evaluate the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
