In Elmwood, Louisiana, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. For those needing a drug or alcohol hair test, our services are top-notch, with testing centers available in all cities across the nation that perform hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be used. Our hair tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized options.

Increasingly, drug testing methods are turning towards hair follicle tests. Many organizations, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug testing over the traditional urine tests. Such tests are favored by employers with strict anti-drug policies, legal courts, and probation officers. Advantages include an extended detection window of up to 90 days, ensuring a reliable and cheat-proof collection process. However, urine tests remain the choice for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal drug or alcohol use for a period of up to around three months. The collection process is straightforward, the potential for tampering is minimal, and it is easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion comprising around 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) taken near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is suggested to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be obtained. When indicating head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in laboratory processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the introduction of a specimen into the lab’s system, ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and sent, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any requisite data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for drug use. While Screening serves as an economical means to dismiss substance use in the majority of cases, a positive result requires verification to stand legal scrutiny. Any samples showing presumptive positives in Screening demand further confirmation.

When a sample indicates a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair in lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), which highlights why hair drug analysis is among the most complex methods to execute.

Positive screening findings undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating presumptive positives undergo cleansing before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation in alignment with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection windows.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is notably difficult to manipulate hair drug testing, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insights: It delivers a usage trend over time rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analysis typically incurs higher costs than alternate drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the examination pertains to the hair strand rather than the hair follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
