Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Estelle, Louisiana. Our expertise in hair drug and alcohol screenings ensures that our centers, located across all major cities nationwide, are well-equipped to carry out these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are sufficient for use. The analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific substances.

Hair follicle testing has gained increased prominence in recent times, with many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals opting for these over conventional urine tests. Such tests are favored by organizations with zero-tolerance policies, judicial bodies, and those monitoring probation conditions. A key advantage lies in its extended detection window of up to 90 days, resistant to manipulation, though urine tests remain unparalleled in detecting the most recent 5-day drug usage.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records long-term usage of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When acquired near the scalp, it offers a detection timeframe of up to about 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to obtain, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hairs (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg, which is the optimal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler's scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent volume of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair strictly imply scalp hair, whereas body hair covers all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process of analyzing a drug test result comprises four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the preliminary processing of a sample into the lab’s system, ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input not included by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is an initial swift inspection for signs of drug abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient means to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result must be verified for legal acceptance. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation when essential. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a more limited detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Chronological usage data: It offers insights into patterns of drug use over time, rather than solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: Detection in hair typically takes 5-7 days after drug use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally costlier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", the examination analyzes the hair strand, not the sub-scalp hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Estelle, LA, hair follicle testing exemplifies superior detection capabilities over traditional urine tests. Its accuracy surpasses conventional methods, capturing a wider spectrum of drug use history. Unlike urine tests, which have shorter detection windows, hair testing offers unparalleled reliability, making it a preferred choice for mandatory screening scenarios where precision is paramount.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing provides an extended detection window, capturing substance use history up to 90 days, making it invaluable in Estelle, LA. Employers gain a comprehensive perspective on an individual's drug use over an extended period, allowing for more informed decisions about applicants or current employees, effectively evaluating long-term substance history rather than short-term trends.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One of the robust features of hair follicle tests in Estelle, LA, is their resistance to tampering. The testing method significantly reduces sample adulteration risks, ensuring reliable results. Its design is nearly immune to cheating, offering unaltered, genuine outcomes that stand up in both employment and legal contexts, providing stakeholders with assurance in test integrity.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
