At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations throughout Frenier, Louisiana. Should you require hair drug or alcohol testing, we are experts in this area and have facilities in every city across the nation ready to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used for analysis. Hair assessments are effective for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing preferences.

In recent times, hair follicle screening methods have gained preference for drug testing. Employers, judiciary systems, and substance abuse experts are choosing this test over traditional urine analysis. Hair follicle tests are valuable to employers with strict drug policies, legal systems, and individuals under probation. Its primary advantage is the extensive detection period of up to 90 days, gathered under supervision, making it difficult to tamper with. However, urine tests remain more accurate for detecting recent use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant instrument for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of a growing hair strand, hair offers an extended history of alcohol and drug use. When collected near the scalp, hair can indicate drug and alcohol use for up to a 3-month duration. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A strand sample measuring 1.5 inches with about 200 hairs (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests above 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advisable. It is recommended to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable quantity of body hair may be utilized. When referring to head hair, this specifically means scalp hair. Body hair refers to any other hair type (such as facial or axillary).

Process Outline

The primary stages in processing a laboratory drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system, ensuring the sample is properly sealed and shipped, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any uninput data that an electronic chain of custody system might not cover.

Screening involves a rapid initial assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening can economically eliminate suspicion for most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any samples marked as presumptively positive in Screening require a confirmatory check.

For samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair from the original specimen is extracted for further analysis. This stage involves drug extraction from hair at substantially lower concentrations compared to alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening results is accomplished via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Any sample flagged as presumptive positive undergoes washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory process, encompassing Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analysis can trace drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine analysis which identifies recent use with shorter windows.
  • Resilience against tampering: Hair drug tests are hard to manipulate, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Chronological usage data: It charts drug usage over time, unlike tests that only spot recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It typically takes about 5-7 days before drugs become apparent in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Clarification: Despite often being labeled as "hair follicle tests", this test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Frenier, LA, hair follicle testing overtakes traditional urine analysis, offering superior detection capabilities. Benefits of hair testing include longer detection periods and enhanced accuracy over urine tests. While urine tests are confined to recent usage, hair tests present a detailed overview of substance history, enhancing employer confidence in screening reliability.

In Frenier, LA, hair follicle drug tests offer a significant edge by detecting drug use over an extended window of up to 90 days. This capability provides comprehensive insights into an individual’s substance use history, important for employers seeking detailed assessments on applicants or employees. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
