Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Reserve, Louisiana. If a hair drug or alcohol test is what you require, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with testing centers available nationwide that can perform such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. Hair tests can be analyzed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke testing options.

In recent times, the method for drug testing increasingly includes hair follicle tests. Various employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are particularly used by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal systems, and probationary monitoring. The chief advantage of hair follicle drug tests is their extended detection window, covering up to 90 days, with an observed collection that is almost impossible to manipulate. Yet, urine tests remain the most precise for recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is acknowledged as an influential means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of substance intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When obtained from near the scalp, hair can reveal substances spanning roughly a 3-month period. The collection process for hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands, akin in size to a #2 pencil, taken closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for screening and verification. For EtG or additional tests beyond a 10-panel scope, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. The term head hair refers solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in the laboratory handling of drug test evaluations comprise Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. Tasks here ensure the sample is sealed and delivered correctly, a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) is assigned, and any additional data entry lacking from an electronic chain of custody system is completed.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse detection. Though Screening offers a cost-effective method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed to be valid legally. Any samples testing potentially positive in Screening are mandated to undergo further confirmation.

In cases where a sample tests potentially positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample to undergo Extraction. At this step, drugs are withdrawn from hair at concentrations significantly lower than those found in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most intricate to execute.

Validation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples identified as potentially positive are cleaned as relevant before confirmation. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection span: Hair drug tests can trace drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection range.
  • Resistance to manipulation: It is extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, leading to more precise results.
  • Yields historical insights: It can illustrate a timeline of drug usage over an extended period, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the presence of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite being labeled as "hair follicle tests", the exam actually assesses the hair shaft, not the follicle located below the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
