Accredited Drug Testing offers full-scale hair follicle drug testing in Glencoe, Louisiana. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing focuses on hair testing, with locations in every city across the country that can conduct a hair test. For accurate results, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is generally needed. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other tailored testing choices.

Recently, the emphasis on varying approaches to drug testing has increasingly shifted toward the hair follicle drug test. Many employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse specialists mandate a hair drug test over the typical urine analysis. Hair follicle tests are preferred by organizations with strict drug-free policies, judiciaries, and those on probation. The significant advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window, which can reach up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making it extremely difficult to tamper with. However, for discerning drug consumption within the last 5 days, urine analysis remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When procured near the scalp, hair offers a detection window of up to roughly 90 days for various substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 strands (similar to the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. "Head hair" specifically means scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (including facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary insertion of a specimen into the lab's system. This step verifies proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Lab Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data entry absent from an electronic custody system.

Screening provides an initial swift examination for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-sensitive way to dismiss drug presence in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample flags presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. During Extraction, substances are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other approaches (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair testing particularly complex.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All initially positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Merits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer span.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug testing is difficult to manipulate, enhancing result precision.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals usage patterns over time, not merely recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Detection in hair takes around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other testing types.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual growth differences influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the strand rather than the follicle itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
