Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Center Point, Louisiana. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing and offers facilities in every city across the nation that can conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair tests can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing needs.

Recently, drug testing procedures have increasingly favored hair follicle drug tests. Various employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug testing over the conventional urine method. This test is popular among employers who uphold zero-tolerance policies, judicial entities, and probation individuals. A major advantage of hair drug testing is its extended detection window, which can be up to 90 days, is collected under direct supervision, and is nearly foolproof. However, urine tests remain the go-to for assessing drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as a potent means for detecting substance usage. Hair records a prolonged history of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. When sourced near the scalp, hair offers up to around a 3-month detection period for substances like alcohol. It is convenient to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, an ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels beyond 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. It is recommended to measure the sample with a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent body hair quantity might be used. When mentioning head hair, it implies scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all alternate hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in lab processing of drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary input of a specimen into a lab's system. This involves checking that the specimen was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial brief assessment for substance misuse. Though Screening is economical for negating drug use in most samples, a positive outcome necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples that appear positive at Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If Screening shows a sample as potentially positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than in methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug analysis the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing potential positivity are cleansed before confirmation as required. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory procedure undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Hair drug tests are hard to tamper with, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a usage pattern over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: Drugs become traceable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other substance testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
