Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services right in Goosport, Louisiana. Should you require a hair or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in this field with testing centers across the nation in every city, ready to conduct your hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body is needed. Hair tests can evaluate the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

In recent times, the adoption of hair follicle drug testing has risen significantly. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now favor hair drug tests over urine tests. This testing method is essential for employers with strict anti-drug policies, the judicial system, and probation services. One of the main advantages is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected via supervised methods, minimizing chances of tampering. Nevertheless, urine tests remain preferred for detecting drug usage within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a historical record of alcohol and drugs by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) from the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests involving more than 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for specimen weighing. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four main phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial steps of integrating a sample into the lab's system. This includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and delivered, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional information not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial, rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening offers a budget-friendly approach to eliminate drug usage for the majority of test samples, a positive screening must be confirmed for court admissibility. Any samples testing presumptively positive during Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, substances are isolated from hair at lower concentrations than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), validating hair drug screening as one of the most challenging methods to execute.

For any positive screening outcomes, Confirmation is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing as needed before confirmation. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair terms and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter window.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is notoriously challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical insight: It outlines drug use patterns over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can alter the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis involves the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
