Accredited Drug Testing offers a comprehensive suite of hair follicle drug tests in Grand Coteau, Louisiana. If your need lies in hair drug or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, with facilities present across all cities nationwide ready to conduct hair tests. Generally, hair from the scalp or body, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, is required. Hair analysis can test for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method for drug testing. Many employers, judicial settings, and Substance Abuse professionals now favor hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Used by companies with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and those on probation, hair follicle tests offer a longer detection period—typically up to 90 days—and are conducted in a closely monitored setting, making them almost impossible to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term information of substances by preserving biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected adjacent to the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. It is straightforward to collect hair, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additions, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, it refers strictly to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for handling a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step verifies that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid check for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective means to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be permissible in court. Any samples indicated as presumptive positives during Screening require subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample test as presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, substances are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations in comparison to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Needed presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can unveil drug usage up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, thus enhancing result reliability.
  • Delivers historic data: It can map a drug usage pattern over time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Price: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Divergence in outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing stands out in Grand Coteau, LA, as it outperforms urine tests in numerous ways. The key advantage is its extraordinary detection accuracy and reliability, especially over an extended period. Unlike traditional urine tests, hair tests are less susceptible to environment-induced changes, delivering more consistent results.

Employers find hair testing invaluable as its detection window surpasses that of urine tests, covering a broader timeframe. The enhanced accuracy ensures comprehensive evaluations of potential or current employees, bolstering workplace safety and compliance.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing offers an extended detection window of up to 90 days, significantly longer than other methods. This allows employers in Grand Coteau, LA, to gain insightful data on a potential or current employee's drug use history. The prolonged detection span supports better informed decision-making related to hiring and policy adherence.

Employers benefit immensely from this detailed substance history as it allows them to enforce robust hiring standards. The wider detection window ensures a thorough evaluation process, aiding in the creation of a safer and more compliant work environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
