Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug examinations in Haynesville, Louisiana. For those seeking a hair-based drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities across the Nation ready to conduct these evaluations. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Options include analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing.

Recently, hair follicle drug assessments have become more prevalent in testing methodologies. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals often favor these over traditional urine tests. Hair-based assessments are preferred by zero-tolerance employers, judiciary systems, and supervising bodies. The major advantage is its superior detection period of up to 90 days, observed collections, and minimal risk of tampering. Yet, for recent drug use detection within a five-day span, urine tests remain optimal.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion comprising roughly 200 strands of hair (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or testing beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's recommended to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent volume of body hair can be collected. Head hair refers specifically to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of laboratory analysis for a drug test result is composed of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing phase where a sample is integrated into a laboratory system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data inputs not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a rapid preliminary test for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug usage in a majority of samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in legal contexts. Samples that are potentially positive in Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging procedure to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicated as positive undergo a cleansing before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests trace drug use for up to 90 days, compared to the shorter window of urine tests.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, which enhances the precision of the results.
  • Reveals usage patterns: Offers trends of drug use over time, not just immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other testing techniques.
  • Results may vary: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
