Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Homer, Louisiana. Whether you require a hair analysis for drugs or alcohol, our specialty testing center excels in this area, with locations across the U.S. to facilitate testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is sufficient. Various drugs, alcohol/ETG, or bespoke testing can be conducted.

In recent times, drug screening methodologies have increasingly utilized hair follicle tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance experts now prefer this over traditional urine exams. Hair tests are popular among zero-tolerance employers, legal settings, and probation cases. The key advantage is its extended detection range, reaching up to 90 days, under a monitored process, and almost impossible to trick. For substances used in the last 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of such substance intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can show drug and alcohol use over an estimated 3-month period. This type of sample is straightforward to collect, fairly resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment comprising around 200 hair strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) from the scalp area yields approximately 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG tests, extensions, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen is suggested. If a person lacks scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When specifying head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair covers all other types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in processing a drug test result in a laboratory: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the step where a sample is initially processed into the lab system. This involves confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and transported, providing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening entails a quick preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening provides a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug consumption for most samples, a positive screen must undergo confirmation to be deemed valid in legal contexts. Any samples identified as presumptively positive during Screening require further confirmation through a secondary test.

If a sample appears positive during the Screening process, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for further preparation during Extraction. This phase sees drugs being extracted from hair at concentrations lower than those found in other testing methods, such as urine or oral fluid. Hence, hair drug testing is regarded as the most complex methodology to execute.

Positive screening outcomes are validated via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive undergo washing as necessary before confirmation. Each step from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, making results more reliable.
  • Provides patterns of usage: It reveals drug usage trends over time rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and differences in individual hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
