Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lebeau, Louisiana. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers available in cities nationwide. To conduct a test, typically 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed. These tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for specific substances.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence over traditional methods. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. This preference often stems from an employer's zero-tolerance policies, legal requirements, or probationary conditions. Hair tests excel with a longer detection window, lasting up to 90 days, are observed during collection, and are difficult to fake. However, urine tests remain the best choice for detecting recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a chronological record of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers in the hair strand as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use within a roughly 3-month period. Collection of hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and easy to send.

A 1.5-inch segment containing around 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for analysis and validation. For EtG, add-ons, or panels exceeding 10, a sample of 150mg is advised. It is best to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be used, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be substituted. References to head hair signify only scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test outcome consists of four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is integrated into a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was packaged and transported correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and includes any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial rapid evaluation for drug use. Although Screening efficiently rules out drug use in most samples, successful legal acceptance requires a positive screen to be validated. Any samples flagged as presumptively positive during Screening necessitate further verification.

If a sample is flagged as presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for preparation in the Extraction phase. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower levels than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing a challenging procedure to execute.

Validation of any positive screening results is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptively positive are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug testing can identify drug usage up to 90 days, compared to urine tests, which have a more limited detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical perspectives: The test can illustrate a pattern of substance use over time, not just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other drug evaluation methods.
  • Inconsistent outcomes: Variables like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can affect the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
