Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Maxie, Louisiana. Whether it's a hair drug or alcohol test you're seeking, our specialty lies in hair tests, with centers nationwide capable of performing such tests. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or body hair is typically used. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offers other tailored testing options.

In recent times, drug testing often includes hair follicle drug tests as a preferred method. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are switching from urine tests to hair tests. Hair follicle tests are chosen by employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probation cases. Their main advantage is the long detection window for drug consumption, extending up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making them hard to manipulate. Yet, for detecting recent use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is widely regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a prolonged history by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. Hair samples taken near the scalp can detect drug and alcohol use over roughly three months. This form of sampling is straightforward, poses challenges for tampering, and is convenient for transportation.

Acquiring a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is ideal for tests. For tests like EtG, additional panels, or when testing beyond 10 drugs, a sample of 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If one cannot collect scalp hair, equal quantities of body hair are acceptable. When referencing head hair, it pertains only to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (like facial and axillary).

Procedure Summary

The lab processing of a drug test comprises four crucial steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the laboratory’s system, which includes checking that it was appropriately sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and ensuring any additional data missing from an electronic chain of custody system is completed.

Screening consists of an initial assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening serves as a cost-efficient method to potentially negate drug use in most samples, any positive result must be confirmed for legal acceptability. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample test positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. During Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair, albeit at much lower concentrations than other procedures (such as urine or oral fluid). This low concentration makes hair drug analysis the most challenging method to conduct.

Positive screening confirmations are achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. If needed, presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation. Throughout the process from Accessioning to Confirmation, the lab adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of Hair Drug Analysis:

  • Extended detection period: Detects drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing urine tests with more limited timeframes.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test proves highly challenging, leading to more reliable results.
  • Offers historical perspective: Captures patterns of drug use over a duration, not merely recent activity.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot identify recent drug use: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Price: Generally, hair drug analysis incurs higher costs than alternative methods.
  • Result variations: Hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," this analysis examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

For drug testing superiority in Maxie, LA, hair follicle testing prevails over urine testing. With their ability to trace substances over a longer period, hair tests offer unparalleled detection accuracy, making them the preferred choice for employers and courts over traditional urine tests. Extended Detection Window

In Maxie, LA, the extended detection window of hair follicle testing is a significant advantage. Capable of revealing drug use patterns up to 90 days prior, it provides employers a full understanding of an individual's substance use history. This prolonged detection period helps in assessing true lifestyle choices compared to short-term urine tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
