In Ossun, Louisiana, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing for drugs. Our expertise in hair testing is supported by centers across all cities in the nation, capable of performing these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become common in drug testing methodologies in recent years. Many employers, the judiciary, and substance abuse experts now prefer this method over standard urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, legal systems, and probationary individuals utilize these tests because of their ability to detect drug use over up to 90 days. Although a urine test is more precise for recent use within five days, hair tests provide a longer detection window and an observed collection process, making them hard to manipulate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as a significant method for detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair archives a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the strands' fibers. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug presence for up to about three months. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively tough to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, add-ons, and/ or over 10-panel tests, a 150mg specimen is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the specimen on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, the same quantity of body hair can be obtained. Head hair references pertain solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processes in drug testing consist of four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the sample’s initial handling into the laboratory system. This process ensures the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial assessment for substance use. Although it offers an economical approach to eliminate drug usage for most samples, positive screenings require subsequent confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples showing presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

For samples with presumptive positives in the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening the most challenging method.

Confirmation of any positive screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as required. Throughout the process from Accessioning to Confirmation, both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards apply.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection timeline.
  • Elimination of deceit: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It offers a historical view of drug usage, extending beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of confirming recent use: Detection in hair occurs roughly 5-7 days after drug intake.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other methods.
  • Outcome variability: Factors like hair color and growth variations can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", this test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
