Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Oxford, Louisiana. If you're in need of a hair substance or alcohol test, our expertise is in hair testing, with centers across the country capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inch hair from your head's crown or body can be used. Hair testing services analyze for substances, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug assessments have become more commonplace in drug testing methods. A range of employers, judicial systems, and substance counselors now prefer hair drug assessments over typical urine tests. Hair follicle drug assessments are favored by zero-tolerance workplaces, judicial systems, and individuals on probation due to their much longer drug detection times, typically up to 90 days. These tests occur in a supervised setting and are difficult to tamper with, though for detecting very recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine testing remains more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a historical record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the hair's fibrous structure. When hair is gathered close to the scalp, it can reveal up to a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and containing about 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp equates to 100mg, which is the optimal amount for analysis. For EtG, additional tests, and those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If no scalp hair is accessible, an equivalent volume of body hair can be taken. References to head hair imply only hair from the scalp. Body hair includes all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug test result process comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial processing phase of recording a sample into a laboratory's framework. It involves ensuring the sample’s security and proper transport, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any additional data entry not supported by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening involves a rapid preliminary assessment for drug presence. Screening serves as an economical approach to exclude drug use for most samples, though a positive result necessitates further validation for legal acceptance. All samples flagged as presumptively positive through Screening require a subsequent verification.

For samples flagged as presumptively positive at the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug screening notably challenging to execute.

Verification of any positive Screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before their confirmation phase, as deemed necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory procedure adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Sustained detection period: Hair analysis can recognize drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Tampering with a hair drug test is notably difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Yields historical insights: It can illustrate a long-term drug usage pattern rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Differing results: Variations such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence the drug metabolite concentration within the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
