Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Pleasure Bend, Louisiana. Whether you need a test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair assessments is unmatched, and we provide services through our nationwide testing facilities. Typically, you require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body. Hair testing is effective for screening drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be customized for specific needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent for screening substance use. Many companies, judicial systems, and addiction specialists now favor hair over urine tests. Employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, court systems, and probation programs all benefit from the hair test's extended detection period of up to 90 days. While it offers robust defense against tampering, urine remains ideal for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of substances by embedding biomarkers within its structure as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug usage over up to a 90-day period. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to deliver.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation steps. For testing of EtG, add-ons, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen amount of 150mg is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair cannot be collected, equivalent body hair should be gathered instead. References to head hair specifically denote scalp hair. In contrast, body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four critical stages in processing a drug test result within the laboratory: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step, where a sample is entered into the laboratory's records. This step confirms that the sample is properly sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and supplements any missing data that the electronic chain of custody system has not provided.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment to identify substances of abuse. Though it provides a cost-efficient means to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive findings from Screening necessitate further validation before being deemed legally permissible. Those samples indicating a positive result during Screening must undergo additional confirmation testing.

When a specimen shows a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for further processing in Extraction. At this stage, substances are isolated from the hair at far reduced concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of performing hair drug testing.

Any positive results from Screening undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation as required. Every stage, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is scrutinized in alignment with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025 protocols.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection duration: Hair drug testing can reveal drug use extending up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection range of urine tests.
  • High security against tampering: The accuracy of hair drug testing is enhanced by its resistance to cheating.
  • Tracks usage patterns: It identifies drug use trends over time, offering more than just recent usage insights.

Limitations:

  • Fails to detect new use quickly: Drugs become traceable in hair only after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Compared to other drug testing methods, hair tests typically incur higher costs.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as the color of hair and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis evaluates the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
