Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Rayne, Louisiana. If you're seeking hair drug or alcohol tests, we are experts in this field, with testing facilities available across all cities nationwide ready to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required for testing. Our hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific options.

Over the years, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method of screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are increasingly opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by those enforcing strict no-drug-use policies, courts, and probation officers. The main advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection period—up to 90 days—collected under supervision, making tampering difficult. However, for detecting drug use in the last five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures an extended timeline of drug and alcohol presence by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month timeframe for detecting drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipment.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's size) nearest to the scalp yields around 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for assessment and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, it's advisable to gather 150mg of the sample. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent volume of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the preliminary integration of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This process includes ensuring that the sample was securely sealed and correctly delivered, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening efficiently excludes drug usage for numerous samples, a positive screening necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples identified as presumptively positive during Screening must undergo further confirmation.

When a sample is deemed presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is separated from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at far lower concentrations than with other methods (for example, urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with a presumptive positive result are appropriately cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection duration.
  • Difficult to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thereby rendering the results more reliable.
  • Supplies historical context: They can illustrate a pattern of drug use over a span of time, beyond merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Detecting drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days following consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth rate can alter drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", these tests actually examine the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
