In Woodside, Louisiana, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol hair test, we specialize in such testing with centers available nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required, either from the head or body. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offers other customized options.

The prevalence of hair follicle drug testing has risen in recent times for drug screening purposes. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer this over the conventional urine test. It's favored by zero-tolerance workplaces and probationary programs for its extended detection span, reaching up to 90 days. Despite this, urine tests still hold the advantage for recent substance use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has increasingly been recognized as an effective approach for detecting substance use, including alcohol. Hair strands preserve evidence of alcohol and drug usage through embedded biomarkers. When hair near the scalp is collected, it can reveal consumption habits over roughly a 3-month period. Collecting hair is straightforward, tough to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample consisting of 1.5 inches of about 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields approximately 100mg of material, which is ideal for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or for panels exceeding 10, a sample of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent mass of body hair can be used. By head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory procedure comprises four central stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the laboratory's records. This step ensures the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and finalizes any additional data entry missing in an electronic custody chain system.

Screening offers a preliminary basic evaluation for substance abuse. Although Screening efficiently eliminates drug use for most samples, a court-viable positive screen requires confirmation. Any samples indicating a positive result in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower densities in contrast to other methods (such as urine or saliva), making hair drug testing especially challenging.

Confirmation of any initially positive results is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if required. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined according to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests identify drug use over about 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair drug testing resists tampering, ensuring more precise results.
  • Chronological usage data: This method reflects a pattern of substance use over time, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to indicate recent usage: Drugs become noticeable in hair only after around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair testing tends to incur higher costs compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result discrepancies: Variables like hair color and individual growth rates can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: This test is frequently termed a "hair follicle test", nonetheless, its examination focuses on the hair itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
