Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Brewer, Maine. Need a hair or alcohol drug test? Our specialty lies in hair testing, with centers across all U.S. cities ready to perform these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. We can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customize hair tests to suit your needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has grown increasingly popular in recent years. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair tests over urine tests. These tests benefit employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal entities, and those on probation. A key advantage is its longer detection period, up to 90 days, observed meticulously, and nearly impossible to falsify. Yet, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the best option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows, hair can offer an extended history of alcohol and drug use. When sampled from the area near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection timeframe of up to three months for alcohol and drug usage. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising roughly 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for initial testing and verification. For EtG, supplementary, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent volume of body hair can be gathered. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal steps in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial intake of a sample into the lab's system. This step includes checking that the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any outstanding data entry that isn't covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly technique to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive screening result must be verified to be legally accepted. Samples indicating a positive result at Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

If the Screening phase yields a presumptive positive, additional hair is selected from the primary sample for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than those in other techniques (like urine or saliva), which explains why hair drug screening is the most complex technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleaned before confirmation when necessary. The complete lab process, ranging from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • High integrity: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Records past usage: Displays a pattern of drug intake over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs are usually identifiable in hair about 5-7 days after use.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", the assay targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Brewer, ME, hair follicle tests stand out over traditional urine tests for several reasons. The sensitivity and comprehensive analysis of hair tests make them a superior choice, offering greater detection accuracy and consistency. Their ability to identify a range of substances gives them an edge in reliability, crucial for businesses maintaining strict compliance policies.

Compared to urine tests, hair follicle analysis is a more thorough option for Brewer employers, reflecting a more extended history of substance use. This provides decision-makers with essential data regarding employees or potential hires, leading to informed and responsible judgments about workforce safety and accountability.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle tests allow Brewer employers to explore substance use over an extended period. With a detection window of up to 90 days, they offer a detailed historical view that's instrumental for thorough assessments. This extended timeframe vastly exceeds the typical urine test, which usually detects recent usage only, giving a more complete picture of an individual's drug history.

The length of detection time proves invaluable in Brewer's employment screenings, offering insights into behavioral patterns that recent use tests might miss. Understanding wider trends equips employers with the crucial data needed to ensure a safe and productive workspace, free from substance-related incidents.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One formidable advantage of hair follicle tests in Brewer, ME, is their tamper-resistance. The methodology involved significantly minimizes the potential for sample manipulation, ensuring the integrity of the results. This marks a stark contrast to more conventional tests that might be more susceptible to adulteration.

By employing hair testing, organizations in Brewer can trust that the outcomes are genuine and reflective of an individual's true substance use patterns. This confidence in the process underpins strategic decisions related to hiring and policy enforcement, making hair tests a vital component of reliable workplace safety protocols.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
