Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Hinckley, Maine. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol screening, we specialize in these tests and maintain facilities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary, though body hair can be used. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, as well as offering tailored testing solutions.

The use of hair follicle drug tests for substance screening has seen a rise recently. Employers, legal bodies, and substance abuse specialists often prefer this method over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are favored for their ability to detect drugs over an extended period, up to 90 days, and for the difficulty in tampering with the sample. Despite this, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination has emerged as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged history of substances by embedding indicators in the strands as they grow. When cut near the head, hair can offer nearly a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and other substances. Gathering hair is easy, relatively resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations above 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample is advisable. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. Head hair refers solely to scalp hair. All other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.) are classified as body hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step of processing a sample into the lab's system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any necessary data entry beyond what the electronic chain of custody system provides.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is economically efficient for eliminating drug use in most samples, court admissible results require confirmation of any positive findings. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is preliminarily positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen to undergo Extraction. Here, substances are extracted from hair in significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screen is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples preliminarily positive are cleansed before confirmation when necessary. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is monitored under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard certification.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for nearly 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, increasing result accuracy.
  • Chronological usage data: It depicts a timeline pattern of substance use over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to spot recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal variability in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strands and not the follicles beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
