In Woolwich, Maine, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. Specializing in both drink and illicit drug hair tests, we operate a nationwide network of testing centers. For most individuals, samples require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body. Our services include drug analysis, alcohol/ETG detection, and tailored testing solutions.

Hair follicle drug testing has become a prevalent option in recent times. Employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists often favor it over traditional urine analysis. Those with zero-tolerance drug policies, such as companies and probation services, benefit from hair tests' extensive detection time frame, typically reaching up to 90 days. Though not ideal for identifying recent use (within 5 days), it is near-impossible to deceive when collected under observation.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective instrument for unveiling drug and alcohol consumption. The hair's ability to confine biomarkers within its fibers as it grows offers an extensive timeline for substance usage. When extracted near the scalp, hair samples can reveal alcohol and drug presence over approximately a three-month period. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp constitutes 100mg of hair, which is the optimum quantity for analysis. For tests involving EtG, additional screenings, and/or over 10 panels, a total of 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a similar quantity of body hair can be acquired. References to head hair are exclusively about scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types (facial hair, underarm hair, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedures for processing a drug test outcome consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation as the core steps.

During Accessioning, the specimen undergoes initial processing within a lab's framework. This phase includes verifying proper sample sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concluding any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial swift assessment for drug consumption. Though it is a cost-effective approach to negate drug usage for most specimens, a confirmed positive screen is essential for court admissibility. Those samples that initially present a positive result in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. At this juncture, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Confirmation for any affirmative screen result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are cleansed before confirmation when necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the whole laboratory procedure is subject to scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, compared to briefer windows for urine tests.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test proves extremely challenging, bolstering result credibility.
  • Historical usage patterns: These tests unveil drug use trends over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed "hair follicle tests,” these analyses assess the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why opt for hair follicle testing over urine tests in Woolwich, ME? The advantages of hair testing include superior detection accuracy and consistency. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
