Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Dunkirk, Maryland. For those needing hair or alcohol testing, we provide expertise in hair examinations, with centers across all cities nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Hair should ideally be 1.5 to 2 inches, sourced from the scalp or body. This test can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized analyses.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle tests. Employers, the justice system, and substance abuse experts now often prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine analysis. Hair follicle tests support zero-tolerance drug use policies, are employed by courts, and are required for probationary individuals. The significant advantage lies in the extended detection span of up to 90 days, collected under observation, making tampering almost impossible. However, for detection of drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective technique for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. Gathering hair near the scalp offers an approximate 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is easy, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels above 10, a recommendation of 150mg is made. We advise weighing the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is lacking, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When referring to head hair, this specifically indicates scalp hair. Body hair covers all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a drug test result in a lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is entered into the lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) is assigned, and any additional data is entered if not already provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary quick scan for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective way to identify drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be usable in court. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening require further confirmation.

If a Screening suggests a sample is positive, additional hair is extracted and prepared for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging methodology.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug usage for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with a shorter window.
  • Difficult to manipulate: It’s notably challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals pattern of use: It illustrates a timeline of drug consumption over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing outperform urine testing in Dunkirk, MD? It's simple. Hair testing provides superior detection accuracy and reliability. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
