Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Rosaryville, Maryland. If you require a hair analysis for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair testing. We have facilities across all cities nationwide for these tests. Having 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is typically necessary. Hair testing can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom options.

The trend in drug testing has increasingly shifted towards hair follicle analysis in recent times. Employers, legal institutions, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation commonly use these tests. A significant advantage is the extended detection window, covering up to 90 days, after observable collection, making them difficult to circumvent. Yet, for recent usage, urine tests remain the most accurate within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a formidable method for detecting drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug consumption by securing biomarkers within the keratin of the growing strand. When clipped near the scalp, hair offers up to a 90-day window for detecting drugs and alcohol. Collection is straightforward, tampering is relatively challenging, and transport is uncomplicated.

A 1.5-inch specimen comprising roughly 200 strands (similar in width to a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg, the optimal amount for assessment and validation. For EtG, additional assessments, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. It's best to weigh the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unattainable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" strictly refers to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses other types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The lab processing of drug test outcomes consists of four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s system, which involves checking the sample's sealing and shipping integrity, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening includes a preliminary assessment for illicit drugs. Although Screening is budget-friendly for excluding drug use in most cases, a confirmed screen is necessary for legal acceptability. Samples with a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

If Screening results are presumptive positive, more hair is prepped from the sample for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair analysis the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of positive results is done via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire test procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug analyses can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, compared to the shorter span of urine analyses.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair test is significantly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides use history: It demonstrates usage patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair tests tend to be costlier than other testing types.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair pigment and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the assessment evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
