Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Willards, Maryland. If you're looking for a hair or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing, with centers in all major cities nationwide, equipped to perform hair assessments. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your scalp or body are sufficient. Our hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, the technique of drug testing has increasingly involved hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often prefer hair over urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal institutions, and probation supervisors utilize hair testing. It offers a longer detection window for up to 90 days, is collected under supervision, and is difficult to bypass. Yet, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as a potent method for identifying alcohol and drug use. It offers a comprehensive history of drug and alcohol consumption by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When hair is taken from near the scalp, it can reveal a detection period for alcohol and drugs up to roughly three months. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising about 200 hairs (roughly the dimensions of a #2 pencil) located closest to the scalp yields around 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or panels exceeding 10, a sample weighing 150mg is advised. It is suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is absent, a similar volume of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes any other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab handling of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample within a lab's framework. This step involves assuring the sample was properly sealed and delivered, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial cursory examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly measure to rule out drug presence in most samples, a positive screening requires confirmation for it to be legally valid. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lesser concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the hardest to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: It is notably tough to alter results in a hair drug test, ensuring its accuracy.
  • Offers historical data: It provides a usage pattern over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs are traceable in hair around 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", this test assesses the hair strands rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Willards, MD, hair follicle testing is increasingly favored due to its advantages over traditional urine tests. While urine tests focus on recent drug use, hair tests offer a broader history, increasing accuracy and detection reliability. Employers gain a clearer insight into drug habits, which is crucial for maintaining safety.

Hair testing provides a longer detection window and is less susceptible to manipulation, enhancing trust in results. This method's ability to reveal past drug use history makes it a superior choice for comprehensive employee screening.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Willards, MD offers an extended detection window of up to 90 days, allowing for thorough reviews of an individual's drug history. This lengthy period provides a more encompassing view of any substance use compared to other methods with shorter windows.

Employers benefit from this broader timeline as it reveals patterns that could indicate chronic usage, enhancing the insight into candidates and existing employees. It's an invaluable asset for maintaining a responsible, drug-free workplace.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The hair follicle testing method in Willards, MD significantly minimizes the chance of tampering, providing authentic and reliable test results. Its process is inherently designed to counter sample adulteration, ensuring data integrity.

This resistance to manipulation makes hair follicle testing a trustworthy option for employers. The assurance that results accurately reflect the tested individual’s drug use history helps maintain credibility and uphold stringent substance policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
