Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Chelsea, Massachusetts. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with facilities available in cities across the nation to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair tests can assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

In recent times, the preference for conducting drug tests has increasingly included hair follicle testing. A growing number of employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now favor hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests serve employers with strict drug-free policies, courts, and probation cases. The key advantage is a prolonged detection period, spanning up to 90 days, with observation during collection making them nearly cheat-proof. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing strand. When collected near the scalp, it can extend the detection period for alcohol and drugs to about 3 months. The collection of hair is straightforward, is tough to tamper with, and is simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is suggested. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be gathered. References to head hair denote scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses any other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for deriving a drug test result encompasses four critical stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial entry of the sample into a lab's system, ensuring the sample was adequately sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data input outstanding from an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening conducts a preliminary swift analysis for substance abuse markers. Although Screening is a cost-effective approach to rule out drug use in most cases, a confirmed result is required for legal acceptability. Any samples that indicate a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further validation.

If the sample yields a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is gathered from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, substances are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine, oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging to carry out.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS procedures. All samples considered presumptive positive undergo washing prior to confirmation as deemed necessary. The comprehensive laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) accreditation for Hair and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection span: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for a duration of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a brief detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug tests are intricate to bypass, enhancing the reliability of the outcomes.
  • Historical usage data: It provides an image of drug habits over time, rather than just recent exposure.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent intake: It takes around 5-7 days post-drug intake for the substance to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than other testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence metabolites’ concentration in hair.

Note: Despite commonly being termed "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the strand of hair rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
