Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in East Falmouth, Massachusetts. For those requiring drug or alcohol hair tests, we are experts in this field with test centers in cities nationwide ready to conduct your hair test. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is typically required, either from the crown or body, and can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific testing needs.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly turned to hair follicle tests. Hair drug tests are favored by employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts over standard urine tests. Particularly for employers enforcing strict drug-free policies, hair follicle tests are invaluable for detecting drugs over a 90-day window, conducted under observation and extremely difficult to manipulate, though urine tests remain preferable for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening is widely recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When cut near the scalp, hair can offer up to a three-month window for detecting drugs and alcohol. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A portion of 1.5 inches of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, the optimal sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or testing above 10 panels, 150mg of the hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair may be collected. Head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The primary stages in the laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab's system. This process entails verifying the sample’s proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any outstanding data input not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary quick assessment for drugs of abuse. Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use in the majority of cases; however, a positive screening must be validated to be court-admissible. Any samples that show a preliminary positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample reveals a positive indicator during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are drawn from hair at far lower concentrations than in other methods like urine or oral fluid testing, making hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation when necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen by the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a brief detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, thereby increasing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a drug use pattern over time, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent consumption: It takes approximately 5-7 days for substances to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments typically incur higher costs than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the examination actually evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in East Falmouth, MA

The hair follicle method outshines urine tests, offering unparalleled accuracy in drug detection. Unlike traditional urine tests, hair follicle testing is less prone to tampering or false negatives. It's capable of revealing substance patterns over an extended timeframe, providing a more extensive view than urine tests, which mainly capture recent drug use.

In comparison, urine tests are limited in scope and have a shorter detection window, often up to a few days. Hair testing circumvents these issues, bringing more reliable insights, especially important for employers and legal entities in East Falmouth, who demand diligent monitoring and evaluation processes.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in East Falmouth, MA

Hair follicle testing offers a much longer detection period compared to other drug tests, effectively identifying drug use over the past 90 days. This extensive tracking capability is crucial for employers aiming to get a clear picture of an individual's drug use history, aiding in informed decision-making processes regarding hiring and employment continuation.

For employers in East Falmouth, this prolonged detection window leads to greater insight into an individual's behavior patterns. It ensures that any potential risks associated with substance abuse are identified early and adequately managed, safeguarding workplace safety and productivity.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests are known for their resilience against tampering, offering a more secure testing option. Their design significantly reduces the risk of adulteration, providing East Falmouth employers with results that are not only reliable but also virtually tamper-proof. This ensures a high level of confidence in the outcomes.

In contrast to urine tests, where sample manipulation can be an ongoing concern, hair tests deter such actions due to the nature of their collection and analysis processes. This makes them ideal for environments demanding high integrity in drug-testing results, such as legal and corporate settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
