Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Erving, Massachusetts. Specializing in hair testing for drugs and alcohol, we have numerous centers across the country ready to conduct these tests. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, our hair tests can assess the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized options.

More recently, drug testing methods have increasingly adopted hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now often favor hair tests over urine tests. This approach serves employers with strict no-drug policies, legal courts, and probationary individuals due to its extended detection period, which can span up to 90 days. Nevertheless, for identifying drug use within the past five days, urine tests maintain their accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become a recognized method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair traps biomarkers within its fibers, offering a lengthy history of substance use. If gathered near the scalp, it can present a detection span of up to around 90 days for various substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample made up of nearly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and verification. When testing for EtG, additional elements, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, 150mg of specimen is advised. It's best to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair can be gathered. Referencing head hair is specifically about scalp hair, while body hair encompasses types such as facial or axillary.

Process Overview

The four principal phases in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial induction of a sample into the lab's system. This step checks that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody method.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for drugs. Though it offers an economical approach to exclude drug use in most samples, positive results must undergo confirmation for legal validity. Samples deemed positively indicative in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample be seemingly positive post-Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are drawn from hair in far lesser concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), positioning hair drug screening as a complex practice.

Positive screening results go through Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirming, all samples marked presumptive positive are cleansed as necessary. The complete process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair directive and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug intake up to 90 days, contrasting with the brief detection window of urine tests.
  • Difficult to deceive: Manipulating a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing result precision.
  • Shows historical usage: It tracks a user’s drug consumption pattern over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drug detection in hair takes about 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often incur higher costs than other testing methodologies.
  • Result inconsistencies: Hair color and unique growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly misidentified as "hair follicle tests", this procedure examines the hair strand rather than the scalp follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
