In Gill, Massachusetts, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist and offers centers nationwide that can conduct this testing. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is typically required, either from the head or body. These tests are versatile, analyzing for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Lately, hair follicle testing has become a more standard practice for drug screening. Increasingly, employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair tests over traditional urine analysis. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationers value hair tests for their extended detection timeframe, which can reveal drug use up to 90 days after consumption. Moreover, these tests are difficult to manipulate, though for recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests hold superior accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective technique for identifying substance and alcohol use. The hair retains biomarkers in the strands of its fibers as it grows, offering a lengthy timeline of alcohol and drug use. When taken near the scalp, hair can present an estimated detection window of up to three months for such substances. The process of collecting hair is uncomplicated, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch length of approximately 200 hair strands, similar in size to a #2 pencil and gathered near the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for initial and confirmatory testing. For EtG, additional, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is recommended. It's advised to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically pertains to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The key phases in processing a drug test in a laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the commencement of sample processing within a laboratory system. This phase includes ensuring the sample’s seal and shipment is proper, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing other required data entries absent in an electronic custody chain system.

Screening is a preliminary, economical evaluation to check for drugs of abuse, which serves to exclude drug usage in most samples. However, a positive screen result must undergo confirmation to be valid in court. Presumptive positives in Screening necessitate further confirmatory testing.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is sourced from the original sample for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at markedly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), explaining why hair drug testing is considered the most intricate testing methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All presumptive positive specimens are cleansed before confirmation when required. The complete lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify substance usage for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Conveys usage history: It reveals a pattern of drug ingestion over time, beyond recent consumption alone.

Drawbacks:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: Drugs become noticeable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is usually pricier compared to other testing alternatives.
  • Variability in outcomes: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact the presence of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though termed "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is performed on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
