Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in North Falmouth, Massachusetts. Whether it's for detecting drugs or alcohol, our specialized hair testing is available at centers in cities across the USA. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair analyses can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific needs.

In the past few years, hair follicle tests have increasingly become a preferred method for drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often opt for this over traditional urine tests. Hair tests support zero-tolerance policies by employers and for authorities managing probationary cases. A key advantage is the extended detection timeframe for drug use, generally up to 90 days, with an observed and cheat-proof collection process. Nevertheless, for usage detection within 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a timeline of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the hair as it grows. When hair is taken near the scalp, it can show substance use for up to about three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of hair measuring 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and verification. For EtG, additional testing, and/or beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When the term head hair is used, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types like facial and underarm hair.

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory procedures involve four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step of getting a sample logged into the lab's system. This step includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any necessary data not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drugs. Although it's an affordable way to identify drug use in most samples, a positive result must be validated to be valid in court. Samples with a presumptive positive must undergo further confirmation.

In cases where the Screening stage indicates positive results, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. At this point, substances are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing particularly challenging to execute.

Any positive results from the screening are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples are washed prior to confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and standardized to ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical usage data: Offers a usage pattern over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variances: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth patterns can influence metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though commonly labeled "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
