At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle testing services in North Truro, Massachusetts. Our expertise encompasses both drug and alcohol hair testing, and with our extensive network of testing facilities in cities nationwide, we can fulfill your hair testing requirements. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is needed from the crown or body. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and allow for specialized testing options.

The adoption of hair follicle drug testing has been growing in recent times. Employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists increasingly prefer hair drug testing over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by organizations with strict drug use policies, courts, and individuals under probation. A notable advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection period of up to 90 days, carried out under supervision, making it nearly foolproof. However, urine testing remains superior for recent drug use detection within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The strands retain biomarkers within their fibers, preserving a comprehensive history of substance usage. If taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection span of roughly three months for substances. It is easy to gather, difficult to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

An ideal sample, consisting of a 1.5-inch section with approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil), yields 100mg, which is optimal for testing. For additional evaluations like EtG or those exceeding ten drug panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample is suggested. In cases where scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used instead. "Head hair" specifically indicates scalp hair only, while "Body hair" denotes all other types, such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The testing process in laboratories encompasses Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the step where the sample is integrated into the lab’s system, ensuring it was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any needed manual data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening acts as the initial brisk assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening economically discards most samples as drug-free, positive results need confirmation to be considered valid in legal settings. Samples showing potential positive results in Screening require an additional confirmation.

Presumptive positives in Screening lead to additional hair being extracted from the initial sample for further processing during Extraction. This phase involves extracting substances from hair at a lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair testing a challenging method to perform.

Positive results from Screening undergo confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positives are washed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is overseen by both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage patterns for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter windows.
  • High resistance to manipulation: The potential to cheat a hair drug test is minimal, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Supplies historical insight: It shines a light on long-term drug use patterns, not just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection: Drugs register in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests often carry a higher cost compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Frequently dubbed "hair follicle tests", the assessment focuses on the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
