Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in South Dennis, Massachusetts. If you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair assessments with facilities nationwide available to conduct these tests. Generally, samples need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from either the head or body. Analyses can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing choices.

In recent times, hair follicle drug examinations have increasingly become a preferred method for drug testing. Many employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse experts now require a hair drug test over traditional urine tests. These exams are favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationers. Hair follicle tests offer extended drug detection up to 90 days and utilize a monitored collection process, making evasion nearly impossible. However, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as a valuable method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures lasting evidence of substances by embedding biomarkers within its fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair offers up to about a three-month detection period for drugs and alcohol. It is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg, which is the preferred amount for screening and verification. For testing EtG, additional factors, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg is advised. It is best to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If there is no scalp hair, an equivalent volume of body hair may be used. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for achieving a drug test result primarily includes Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the lab’s system, involving the verification of proper sealing and shipping, the assignment of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and any additional data entry if an electronic chain of custody system is not used.

Screening is a preliminary, swift check for drugs of abuse. Though cost-effective for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screening must be confirmed to be valid in court. Any presumptively positive Screening samples necessitate a confirmatory step.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are separated from the hair at a concentration far lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

The Confirmation for any positive Screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation, as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, resulting in more dependable outcomes.
  • Historical insight: It can show a timeline of drug use over an extended period, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting recent usage: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the assessment examines the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in South Dennis, MA

Hair follicle testing excels over urine assessments by offering an extended detection window, often up to 90 days, compared to the much shorter duration of urine tests. This attribute makes hair testing particularly advantageous for employers who need detailed insights into longer-term drug use. Additionally, hair tests are less susceptible to tampering, ensuring more accurate and reliable results.

Traditional urine tests are more easily manipulated, reducing their reliability as a testing option. In contrast, hair follicle tests provide a more comprehensive view of substance use history, offering superior detection capabilities. With their enhanced accuracy and dependability, hair tests ensure better compliance monitoring for workplaces in South Dennis, MA.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
