Comprehensive hair follicle drug testing is available through Accredited Drug Testing in Tisbury, Massachusetts. For those needing hair drug or alcohol assessments, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area and operates centers across various cities nationwide. To conduct a hair test, typically 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Tests can detect substances, alcohol/ETG, and more via custom options.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly common for drug assessments. Many companies, the legal system, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer them over traditional urine analysis. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, judicial entities, and probation departments favor these tests for their extended detection period—up to 90 days—and tamper-proof collection process. For detecting very recent drug use, the urine test remains more accurate within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a potent technique for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair retains long-term indicators of substance use by embedding biomarkers into the hair strand's fibers as it grows. If gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to three months for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair sample collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil’s thickness) taken nearest to the scalp will yield 100 mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it’s advised to use 150 mg of the sample. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent portion of body hair can be gathered. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair includes all other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary processing of a specimen into the lab’s system. This process encompasses verifying that the specimen was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any additional information not supplied via an electronic chain-of-custody system.

Screening involves an initial swift assessment for illicit drugs. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use for most samples, any positive screen must be confirmed to be legally acceptable. All samples that are tentatively positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample show tentative positivity during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample for preparation for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug testing presents the most intricate methodology.

Confirmation of any positive Screen result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens undergo washing prior to confirmation when needed. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the guidelines of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use spanning up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a narrower detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: It’s exceptionally challenging to deceive a hair drug test, which makes the results more reliable.
  • Tracks usage patterns: It offers insights into drug use patterns over time, not simply recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot indicate recent use: Drugs manifest in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more compared to alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
