Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in West Falmouth, Massachusetts. For hair drug or alcohol assessments, our expertise lies in hair analysis, with testing locations available across cities nationwide to conduct the evaluations. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the head's crown or body hair is needed. Tests can be formulated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailor-made hair testing solutions.

Over recent years, the hair follicle drug test has gained favor as a method of substance analysis. Employers, legal bodies, and substance abuse experts increasingly opt for hair tests over urine samples. Organizations with no-drug-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and individuals under probation primarily benefit from this method due to its extended detection window of approximately 90 days. It is conducted under supervision for accuracy and resists tampering. Yet, for drug detection within the last five days, urine tests remain the benchmark for precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers, offering a longer history of substance use. When taken near the scalp, hair can show a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and other substances. It's easy to collect, not easily altered, and simple to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch piece of approximately 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is perfect for testing. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond ten panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. It’s best to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, the equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core steps in processing a drug test result in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample enters the lab’s processes. It involves confirming the sample's seal and shipping, assigning it a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and adding any missing data not included in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers a fast check for substance use. Though efficient for ruling out drug use in most cases, a positive result requires confirmation for legal acceptance. Samples that test presumptive positive in Screening need additional confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, more hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. In this step, hair delivers drug extraction at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to execute.

To confirm a positive screening result, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods are used. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is appraised under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can indicate drug use for as long as 90 days, while urine tests have a shorter detection time frame.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, leading to more precise outcomes.
  • Offers usage trends: It provides a usage history over time rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent drug use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand and not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in West Falmouth, MA

Hair follicle tests surpass traditional urine tests by featuring an extended detection period and reliable outcomes. Unlike urine tests, which detect recent drug use, hair tests cover up to 90 days, offering a broader view of an individual’s substance use history. This enhanced scrutiny makes hair tests invaluable for contexts needing rigorous substance use monitoring.

The hair testing methodology minimizes errors and maximizes detection accuracy, setting a benchmark against conventional urine testing. As employers aim for decisive results, hair testing stands as the more accurate and reliable option, giving a fuller picture than a mere snapshot in time.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
