In Addison, Michigan, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug examinations. If a hair drug or alcohol analysis is needed, our expertise in hair testing is available across the nation, with local testing centers equipped for such procedures. Most cases require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, which can be taken from the scalp or body. Tests assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer various personalized testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method for substance screening. Many workplaces, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists now prefer it over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with strict anti-drug policies, legal bodies, and probation officers due to their extended detection period of up to 90 days, observed collection, and resistance to tampering. Nevertheless, for identifying recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is highly regarded as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It captures long-term drug and alcohol histories by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. By collecting hair from the scalp, it can reveal alcohol and drug use within an approximate 3-month period. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil's thickness) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both initial screening and follow-up confirmation. Nonetheless, for EtG, additional screenings, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. Employing a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample's weight is recommended. If scalp hair is not available, a corresponding amount of body hair may be gathered. "Head hair" denotes scalp hair exclusively, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test result in the lab consists of four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial incorporation of a sample into the lab's system, which includes verifying the sample's correct sealing and shipment, issuing an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any needed data entry that an electronic chain of custody system does not cover.

Screening involves an expedited preliminary analysis for drugs of abuse. It’s an economical approach for excluding drug usage in the majority of cases, though a positive screening necessitates corroboration for courtroom acceptability. Any samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening mandate subsequent confirmation.

Should Screening suggest a presumptively positive result, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction, where drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is undertaken using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. All samples with presumptive positivity undergo washing before confirmation as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use spanning up to 90 days, contrasted by shorter periods in urine tests.
  • Higher resistance to tampering: The integrity of hair drug tests is robust against manipulation, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Evidence of usage patterns: It offers insights into drug usage trends over an extended duration rather than merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically costlier compared to alternate drug testing techniques.
  • Result variance: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the evaluation focuses on analyzing the hair strand itself, not the underlying hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
