Located in Anchorville, Michigan, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing has the expertise and nationwide testing centers to facilitate hair testing. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from either the head or body can be used. Hair analysis is possible for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or specially designed testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing is increasingly being integrated into drug screening protocols. A diverse range of users, such as employers, judiciary bodies, and substance abuse specialists, are replacing traditional urine tests with hair drug tests. These tests are favored by organizations with zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and probation cases. They provide the advantage of detecting drug use over a 90-day span and employ a supervised collection process, making them difficult to tamper with. Nevertheless, for drug consumption within the last 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have emerged as a significant means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair holds a prolonged record of alcohol and drug presence by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When collected near the scalp, it can offer roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of approximately 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil in size) closest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panel tests exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. Head hair denotes scalp hair only, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the sample’s initial integration into the laboratory system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While cost-effective for excluding drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be permissible in court. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptively positive result in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves removing drugs from hair at a considerably lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a limited detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is extremely difficult to tamper with a hair drug test, thus providing more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: It illustrates a pattern of drug usage over time, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to become evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
