Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Ashley, Michigan. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise in hair testing is backed by testing centers available nationwide, capable of conducting such tests. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body hair is needed. Hair tests can assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, as well as other tailored hair testing solutions.

Hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly popular in recent years for various testing requirements. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by employers committed to zero-tolerance drug use policies, legal systems, and people under probation. Its key advantage is a detection window up to 90 days, conducted under observation, minimizing cheating risks. However, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the strands of consistently growing hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair can present nearly a 3-month timespan for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with about 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides about 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When referencing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a drug test result in a lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample into a lab’s workflow. This step ensures the sample is sealed and delivered appropriately, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screening outcome requires confirmation for court admissibility. Samples with a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate another confirmation phase.

Should a sample return a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair in significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the more challenging techniques to execute.

Confirming any positive screening outcomes is facilitated through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with a presumptive positive result undergo washing before confirmation as deemed necessary. The complete laboratory operation from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests are capable of identifying drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which possess a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Resistant to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuing more dependable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It offers insights into drug usage patterns over time, instead of only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair strands.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs than other drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Clarification: Often known as "hair follicle tests", the actual test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Ashley, MI

Hair tests outperform traditional urine tests with their extended detection window, providing a broader overview of drug usage. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
