Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Berkley, Michigan. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol examination, our specialty lies in hair testing, with facilities available in cities across the country equipped to conduct such tests. Typically, hair of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body can be used. Hair tests offer the capability to screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing requirements.

Recently, drug testing procedures have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals often favor hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are crucial for entities with zero-tolerance drug policies, probation cases, and court orders. The standout advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, conducted in a monitored setting, making it highly valid. However, urine tests remain the accurate standard for recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for discovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encases a historical trace of alcohol and substances by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a nearly 3-month window for alcohol and drug identification. The collection process is straightforward, the sample is somewhat resistant to tampering, and the handling is uncomplicated.

A 1.5-inch portion comprising about 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred sample size for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional screenings, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the hair. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. Note that when head hair is discussed, it specifically denotes scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary components in lab analysis of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial insertion of a sample into a lab's system. This step confirms the sample was securely sealed and dispatched correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any necessary data not provided through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for substance misuse. While it serves as a budget-friendly method to negate drug usage for most samples, a positive result must undergo confirmation for legal acceptance. Screening findings that are presumptively positive must be corroborated through secondary validation.

For samples with presumptive positive results in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. During this process, drugs are isolated from hair at a much less concentrated level than with other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), substantiating why hair drug assessment is one of the most intricate procedures to execute.

Positive screening outcomes undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if required. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the sanctioning in line with ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection length: Hair drug tests can trace drug activity for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter span.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test proves very challenging, thereby increasing result precision.
  • Historic usage data: It provides a timeline of substance usage over time, not solely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection: It takes approximately 5-7 days before drugs appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Outcome variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite commonly being termed "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis investigates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers significant benefits over traditional urine tests in Berkley, MI. One major advantage is the extended detection window, allowing for the discovery of drug use for up to 90 days, compared to the much shorter timespan of urine tests. This makes hair tests a superior choice for employers seeking consistent assurance of employee sobriety.

Moreover, hair tests are less invasive and more difficult to tamper with, providing a more accurate reflection of an individual's substance use history. This increased reliability makes hair follicle testing an essential tool for maintaining workplace safety and integrity.

Extended Detection Window

In Berkley, MI, hair follicle testing provides employers a significant advantage with its extended detection window, spanning up to 90 days. This comprehensive timeframe enables a thorough assessment of an employee's or candidate's substance use history, offering a much broader perspective than traditional testing methods.

This longer detection period is invaluable for employers, allowing a clearer understanding of an individual's habits. The capacity to view substance history over three months enhances decision-making, supporting policies aimed at reducing workplace risks associated with drug use.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Berkley, MI, the hair follicle testing process sets itself apart as a tamper-resistant method. Unlike other testing options, hair tests are challenging to manipulate, ensuring sample integrity. This robust resistance to adulteration provides peace of mind with results that can be trusted implicitly.

The structural nature of hair and the collection process itself shield against interference. As a result, hair follicle testing equips employers with an unassailable assessment tool, safeguarding their commitment to workplace safety and compliance with drug-free policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
