Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. For those needing a hair-based drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with testing facilities available nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required, either from the scalp or body, to examine for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing needs.

Recently, drug testing methods have more commonly incorporated hair follicle drug testing. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests cater to employers with strict drug policies and those under legal supervision. Their primary advantage is an extended detection window up to 90 days, making them hard to tamper with while observing drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of drug and alcohol presence by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand fibers as they grow. A sample taken close to the scalp can reveal drug and alcohol usage for a duration of up to about three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, less prone to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch length of approximately 200 hair strands, roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil, cut closest to the scalp, generates 100mg of hair, which is optimal for initial screening and verification. For EtG, additional testing, and/or assessments beyond ten panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for precision in weighing the sample. When scalp hair is unobtainable, an equivalent volume of body hair can be substituted. Head hair refers specifically to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test outcome consists of four stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the introduction of a sample into a lab's framework. This step involves ensuring that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for drug presence. Although Screening is economical for initially excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for legal acceptability. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive result in the Screening stage, additional hair from the original collection is utilized for Extraction. During this process, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations much lower than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug testing presents the most significant challenge in methodology.

Confirmed positive results from Screening undergo verification using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation when necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to the guidelines set by both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a brief detection timeframe.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Hair drug tests are challenging to falsify, leading to more reliable results.
  • Offers a usage timeline: They can illustrate a drug usage pattern over months, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Hair needs about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests in Bloomfield Hills, MI, one cannot overlook the increased detection accuracy that hair testing offers. Its reliability surpasses that of urine tests, making it ideal for scenarios requiring thorough verification of substance use over prolonged periods.

With an Extended Detection Window of up to 90 days, hair follicle testing in Bloomfield Hills, MI, provides employers an unparalleled view of an individual's substance use history. This insight is invaluable when assessing potential hires or monitoring current employees, offering a comprehensive understanding of one's drug use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
