Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Chase, Michigan. For those requiring hair or alcohol testing, our expertise lies in hair analysis, with facilities available in every city across the nation to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be tested. Our services include checks for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing preferences.

The trend in drug testing now increasingly involves hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over conventional urine samples. Hair follicle tests are preferred by zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and those on probation. The key advantage is a longer detection window of up to 90 days, collected under direct observation, making evasion nearly impossible. However, for identifying recent use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a chronological record of alcohol and drug presence by capturing biomarkers within the strands. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, fairly tamper-resistant, and convenient for transportation.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) from the scalp can yield 100mg, the preferred amount for initial screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional, and/or extended panel tests above 10, it is advised to collect 150mg of the sample. It is advisable to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. In cases where scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent volume of body hair can be utilized. When speaking of head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair, while body hair signifies all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result encompasses four critical stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step where a sample is processed into a laboratory’s framework. This stage involves ensuring the sample's seal and shipment integrity, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid evaluation for substance abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient strategy for excluding drug usage across most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally admissible. Any samples that appear positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is taken from the original specimen to prepare for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than those in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any positive Screening findings is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, presumptively positive samples are cleaned as required. The comprehensive laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are challenging to manipulate, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Chronological data provision: The tests offer a record of drug use over time rather than just recent occurrences.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests generally incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Parameters like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand above the scalp, not the follicle below.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
