Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Big Rapids, Michigan. If your need is for a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in these tests. We have nationwide centers capable of executing hair tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the crown or other body parts for testing. Hair analyses can be personalized for drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other options.

Recently, the reliance on hair follicle testing for drug screenings has grown. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists now favor hair testing over traditional urine tests. This type of test is favored by employers upholding zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial orders, or probation requirements. The key advantage of a hair test is its extended detection phase of up to 90 days, collected under supervision and nearly cheat-proof. Nonetheless, urine tests remain most precise for drug use detected within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and drug usage by incorporating biomarkers within the shafts of the growing hair strand. When procured near the scalp, hair can deliver a detection timeframe of up to about 3 months for alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

An ideal sample for screening and confirmation consists of a 1.5-inch section comprising about 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil), closest to the scalp, equalling 100mg of hair. For EtG, supplement tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is suggested to determine the specimen's weight using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be acquired. "Head hair" exclusively refers to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" denotes all other varieties (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The fundamental stages in laboratory processing of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of entering a sample into a lab’s system, including authentication that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, allotting a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial swift assessment for drugs of abuse. Although a cost-effective way to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be permissible in court. Samples that appear positive during Screening need secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are removed from hair at a considerably lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging process to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as required. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, making the outcomes more dependable.
  • Delivers historical insight: Hair drug testing can display a timeline of drug usage over a prolonged period, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often costlier than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Variability in outcomes: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth patterns can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly mistaken as "hair follicle tests", the analysis itself focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
