Accredited Drug Testing provides complete hair follicle drug testing services in Detroit, Michigan. If you require a hair-based drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing extends nationwide with centers capable of conducting these tests. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body is generally necessary. Hair tests can determine the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specified tests.

In the past few years, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as a drug testing method. Many organizations, courts, and substance abuse experts now favor hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, the justice system, and individuals on probation benefit from this method. Its key advantage lies in its longer detection window, up to 90 days, achieved through observed collection, making it very hard to manipulate. However, urine tests remain the preferred choice for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Acknowledged for its effectiveness, hair testing serves as a vital approach for spotting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a chronological archive of substances by encapsulating biomarkers within its growing fibers. When collected near the scalp, a hair sample can indicate alcohol and drug use over an approximate three-month timeframe. Collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and shipping is uncomplicated.

For an optimal sample for analysis, a hair segment measuring 1.5 inches and composed of roughly 200 strands, akin to the dimensions of a #2 pencil, should be sourced near the scalp, providing 100mg of hair. For EtG, advanced assessments, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of material is advised. It's suggested to weigh the hair with a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair can be obtained. Head hair denotes only scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process includes four pivotal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the laboratory system, ensuring it has been sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any manual data entry absent in an electronic custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary examination for drug presence. Although a cost-effective means to exclude drug intake in most samples, a positive outcome necessitates validation to be legally upheld. Any samples that test positive in Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample yields a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and readied for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs present in hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), enhancing the complexity of hair drug screening.

Using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques, positive screening results undergo Confirmation. Samples with presumed positives are cleansed before confirmation as required. This entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can unveil drug use over a 90-day span, unlike urine tests with a shorter timeframe.
  • Resilience to tampering: Its resilience against manipulation heightens the reliability of hair drug test results.
  • Insight into usage patterns: Provides an extended record of drug consumption patterns, rather than just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recent use detection: Detectability in hair requires approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests exceed the cost of alternative methodologies.
  • Outcome variability: Elements like hair color and personal growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: Despite being termed "hair follicle tests," the evaluation is centered on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When it comes to detecting substance use, hair follicle testing in Detroit, MI, holds a distinct advantage over traditional urine testing. Hair tests provide superior detection accuracy not only through a broader detection window but by revealing a more comprehensive usage history. This gives employers substantial confidence in their results.

Unlike urine tests, which can only detect recent use, hair follicle testing allows for the uncovering of drug and alcohol use patterns over an extended period. This heightened reliability is appealing to companies that prioritize safety and strict adherence to drug-use policies.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Detroit, MI, is an exceptional tool for detecting drug usage, with its extended detection window reaching up to 90 days. Such duration allows employers to gain a comprehensive insight into an individual’s substance use history, unmatched by other methods.

This long-term detection offers an in-depth reflection of an applicant or employee's lifestyle, aiding employers in making more informed decisions. When reliability and breadth of detection are essential, hair follicle tests provide the clarity needed for effective workplace screenings.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The integrity of hair follicle testing in Detroit, MI, is unparalleled due to its resistance to tampering. This testing method significantly mitigates the risks associated with sample adulteration, ensuring that results remain accurate and unaltered.

By effectively reducing the chances of manipulation, employers and individuals alike can trust that the outcomes of these tests are a true reflection of an individual’s substance use. Hair follicle testing thus stands as a reliable and incontrovertible means of substance detection, securing its reputation as a favored choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
