Providing comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Fowlerville, Michigan, Accredited Drug Testing focuses on hair analyses and has testing centers across the Nation. For testing, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is typically used. Hair assessments can reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, or undergo other specialized testing options.

Over the years, hair follicle drug tests have become a favored method for drug testing. Businesses, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer them over classic urine tests. Used by employers with zero-tolerance policies, the main advantage of hair testing is its extended detection capability, offering results up to 90 days and being hard to manipulate. However, for recent use detection, within 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have emerged as an effective means to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair delivers a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the developing hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair can furnish roughly a 3-month observation window for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

Gathering a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hairs (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp results in 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, additional assessments, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. It is suggested to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is lacking, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key steps in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a specimen into a lab’s system. This incorporates ensuring the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial quick review for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive finding must be verified to be valid in court. Samples tentatively positive in Screening require an additional confirmation.

If a sample results in a tentative positive in the Screening stage, further hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations than with other techniques (ex. urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening presents the greatest methodical challenge.

Confirming any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentatively positive samples are cleansed before verification if needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection window.
  • Tough to deceive: It is significantly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides usage trend: It can display a pattern of drug consumption over time, beyond merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent usage: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become observable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair pigmentation and personal differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", this analysis actually evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Fowlerville, MI, the advantages of hair follicle testing over urine testing are clear. Hair tests provide a much longer window of detection, often up to 90 days. This extended period allows for a more comprehensive overview of an individual's substance history compared to the limited timeframe of urine tests.

The reliability of hair testing offers a lower risk of sample tampering, ensuring trustworthy results. While urine tests are sometimes manipulated, hair testing remains a credible and accurate method, enhancing its appeal to employers and organizations with strict drug policy enforcement.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Fowlerville, MI offers an extended detection window for identifying drug use, covering up to 90 days. This ability to reach back further in time than standard urine tests provides a comprehensive picture of an individual’s history with substances.

Employers benefit from this expansive timeline by gaining the capability to more effectively screen candidates and employees. By understanding the extended drug use patterns, they can make more informed decisions, which enhances workplace safety and integrity.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One significant advantage of hair follicle tests in Fowlerville, MI, is their tamper-resistant nature. Unlike urine samples, which can be easily adulterated, hair samples are more secure, making it difficult to manipulate results or substitute samples.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
