Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Garden, Michigan. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing is adept in hair testing, with centers nationwide capable of performing these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. The evaluation can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair test options.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method in drug examinations. This test is being increasingly mandated by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts instead of the traditional urine tests. Industries with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation prefer hair tests for their extended detection duration, which typically spans up to 90 days, is conducted under direct observation, and is challenging to manipulate. Still, urine tests remain the optimal choice for recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a longer-term record of alcohol and other substances by securing biomarkers within the hairs' growing strand fibers. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer up to nearly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) proximal to the scalp is required to procure 100mg of hair, optimum for both screening and confirmatory purposes. For EtG, additional testing, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a sample weighting 150mg is advised. We advocate weighing the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. When referencing head hair, we solely mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses any other body hair such as facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The principal steps during lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample into a lab's system. This process involves verifying that the sample is correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data inputs absent from an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening constitutes a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of misuse. Although Screening offers an economical solution to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be valid in legal scenarios. Samples indicating drug presence in Screening must undergo a confirmatory step.

If a sample indicates drug presence during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial collection to prepare for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at notably reduced concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine, oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Any positive screening outcome is confirmed through techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Necessary presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation. The complete laboratory process ranging from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated against CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage spanning up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that possess a lesser detection range.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair drug tests are complex to cheat, increasing result reliability.
  • Historical insights: They illustrate a usage pattern over time, as opposed to reflecting only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Recent use detection: Drugs become traceable in hair roughly 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are mostly pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result inconsistencies: Variables like hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not on the scalp’s hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
