Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug testing in Harrison, Michigan. If you require a drug or alcohol test using hair, we specialize in such testing and have facilities available in all cities across the nation to conduct a hair test. In most cases, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body. Hair testing can be customized to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other substances.

Recently, drug testing practices have increasingly adopted hair follicle drug tests. These tests are now preferred by numerous employers, judicial courts, and substance abuse specialists over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial courts, and probationers commonly use hair tests. The key advantage of these tests is their extended drug use detection window, typically up to 90 days, and their supervised collection, which makes them hard to falsify. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting drug use within a recent 5-day period.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the hair shaft as it grows, hair provides a historical record of substance use. When taken near the scalp, hair can yield a detection period of up to roughly 90 days for alcohol and other substances. The collection process is straightforward, altering the sample is relatively challenging, and the sample can be shipped with ease.

A 1.5-inch section containing about 200 hair strands (similar to the diameter of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp supplies 100mg of hair, the preferred amount for both screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG or more than 10 drug panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. It's recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If no scalp hair is available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other kinds (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for drug test results consists of four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step in processing a sample within a lab’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample's seal and shipment were intact, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any additional data entry not provided through an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary check for drug use. While it is an economical way to discount drug use in most specimens, any positive results from Screening must be verified to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require follow-up confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and made ready for Extraction. In this process, drugs are extracted from hair in significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complex to perform.

Confirmation for any positive results from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive specimens are cleaned prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted in adherence to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation requirements.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for periods up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Challenge to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: Hair tests can reveal patterns of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests typically have a higher price point compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the hair follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
