In Leslie, Michigan, Accredited Drug Testing presents a full range of hair follicle drug testing services. Whether hair drug or alcohol tests are needed, our specialty is hair testing, with centers across all cities Nationwide which facilitate these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from either the crown or body. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for other testing needs.

The incorporation of hair follicle drug tests in drug testing procedures has grown in popularity recently. More employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair drug testing over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probationary scenarios heavily rely on hair follicle tests, due to their superior detection period, observed collection method, and resistance to tampering. Nonetheless, for drug use detected within the past 5 days, urine remains the most reliable method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair delivers a chronological record of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When procured near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to around 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for assessment and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assays beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the material is suggested. We advise weighing the material on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable quantity of body hair may be acquired. When discussing head hair, it refers strictly to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of analyzing a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes preliminary handling in the lab’s system. This process includes verifying proper sealing and delivery of the sample, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any missing data entry that isn’t covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening encompasses a preliminary assessment for drug abuse. Though Screening serves as a budget-friendly method to dismiss drug usage in most cases, a positive finding necessitates confirmation to be legally acceptable. Any samples indicating a positive result in Screening must undergo secondary verification.

If a sample appears positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. This phase involves isolating drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug analysis the most intricate methodology to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods are utilized to verify any positive Screening output. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation as required. The complete lab procedure, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, whereas urine assessments have a briefer detection span.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Manipulating a hair drug assessment is extremely difficult, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a drug use pattern over time, not solely recent usage.

Disadvantages:

  • Cannot identify current usage: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments typically incur higher costs than other drug analysis methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the procedure evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Leslie, MI, hair follicle testing stands out significantly when compared to traditional urine tests. Its superior detection timeframe offers a clear advantage, providing a more reliable view into one's substance use habits.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
