Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Norton Shores, Michigan. Our specialty in hair drug and alcohol testing is accompanied by a network of centers accessible nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary from the scalp or body. Hair tests can detect drugs, EtG, and other options.

Recent trends show an increase in utilizing hair follicle drug tests for their longer detection capacity, up to 90 days. Preferred by employers, courts, and professionals for their zero-tolerance programs, hair tests offer accuracy and are less prone to tampering. When checking for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain optimal.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug usage by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When clipped near the scalp, hair can reveal approximately a 3-month timeframe for alcohol and drug use. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising around 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimum sample for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or testing beyond 10 panels, it is advisable to have 150mg of the sample. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the hair sample. If scalp hair can't be obtained, an equivalent mass of body hair may be used. When referring to head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other forms of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the laboratory analysis of a drug testing outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial inclusion of a sample into the laboratory system, which involves checking that the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody approach.

Screening includes an initial rapid check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive result needs verification for it to be valid in legal contexts. Samples identified as potentially positive in Screening require a secondary validation.

If a sample is likely positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluids), making hair drug testing the most complex method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Any ostensibly positive samples are cleaned before confirmation when necessary. The comprehensive laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests allow for a shorter detection period.
  • Increased accuracy: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring greater accuracy of results.
  • Tracks usage patterns: Capable of showing a pattern of drug use over a time span, not limited to recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection: Approximately 5-7 days are needed for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur greater costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variance: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis focuses on the hair strand, rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Norton Shores, MI, surpasses urine testing by offering heightened detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, hair samples reveal a 90-day substance use history, which helps in making informed judgments. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
