Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Paradise, Michigan. For those requiring tests for drugs or alcohol, we are experts in hair testing, facilitating such tests at centers across all cities Nationwide. Typically, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffices. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or accommodate other tailored hair testing needs.

Recently, the approach to drug testing has increasingly incorporated hair follicle analysis. Employers, legal systems, and professionals in substance abuse often prefer hair drug testing over traditional urine tests. These hair tests serve zero-tolerance workplaces, judicial institutions, and probation monitoring due to their extended detection window of up to 90 days, observed sample collection, and difficulty to tamper with. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a potent method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of substances and alcohol by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer up to an approximate 3-month detection period for substances and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample in a laboratory’s system. This step involves checking that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screen needs validation to be admissible in legal proceedings. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening require a subsequent confirmation step.

In cases where a sample shows a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. At this point, substances are drawn from hair at a much finer concentration than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most complex methodology to conduct.

Verification of any positive screening result is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed as necessary before confirmation. The laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can detect substance use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which have a shorter detection span.
  • Difficult to deceive: It is highly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insights: It can illustrate a substance use pattern over a timeframe, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes approximately 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Aspects such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test actually analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
